To save you some time when searching for what to watch, here’s a few movie recommendations – from Asia.

Bollywood

Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

Within this three hour movie, there’s a whirlwind of emotion and a beautiful love story like no other. Naina, an introverted young woman, has her life and worldview completely changed when Aman enters her life. It’s a beautiful story, and one you shouldn’t miss out on.

3 Idiots (2009)

  • Genre: Drama film/comedy-drama
  • Length: 2h 51m

All is well.

An inspirational, coming-of-age film about two friends who want to unite with their long-lost friend, Rancho. Along the way they revisit their past and show us how they came to see and think of the world in a different light.

Korean

Spellbound (2011)

  • Genre: Horror romantic comedy
  • Length: 114 min

It’s not really that scary, it leans more towards the romantic comedy genre and tells the story a magician that wants to make it big. This all becomes possible when he meets Yeo-Ri, a woman who has a secret: she can see ghosts. Yeo-Ri is offered a job with Jo-Goo and together they make a magic act like no other.

Thai

Pee-Mak (2013)

  • Genre: Horror/Romantic Comedy
  • Length: 1h 55m

They say that love is blind and it seems to be true for Mak who has just returned from war. At home, his wife waits for him and Mak is excited to introduce her to his comrades. It’s just a little difficult since his wife is dead, but he doesn’t see it that way.

Chinese

The White Dragon (2004)

  • Genre: Drama/Action Comedy

A young woman becomes endowed with powers to become ‘The White Dragon’, a masked heroine who must defeat the blind swordsman.

 

Hong Kong

Ip Man (&2 and3) (2008)

Donnie Yen depicts the life of Yip Man – a notable figure in the history of Wing Chun martial arts.

Taiwanese

Hear Me

  • Genre: Romantic/Drama
  • Length: 1h 49m

Tian Kuo (Eddie Peng), a young delivery man, notices Yang Yang, a cheerful girl who is always on the sidelines supporting her sister – a swimmer training for the Deaflympics. A love story blooms between Tian Kuo and Yang Yang as they communicate via sign language.

Japanese

Battle Royale (2000)

There are so many films out there, and by no means does this list do them justice. I’ve only given you a selection of films that might interest you, but there are many out there that I have yet to watch. Enjoy!
