Update September 2016: There is a TV show in the works! It will be made by Hulu, which is adapting other book works such as the Handmaid’s Tale and Marvel’s Runaways. The title for the show will be Queen of Shadows.
In honour of Throne of Glass and the upcoming release of book 4 Queen of Shadows (September 1st, mark your diaries people!) we’ve decided to put a dreamcast together or who we think should play each role. So let’s start with our favourite assassin shall we.
Nadia’s Suggestion: Eliza Taylor
Eliza has the blonde hair and blue eyes of Celaena, but more importantly than that she has the acting credits. As Clarke Griffin in the 100, Eliza is no stranger to fighting and making tough decisions. Celaena is more of the fighter than the leader that Clarke is, but after all that time battling (and kissing) Grounders, Eliza would have no problem assassinating people.
Elizabeth’s Suggestion: Saoirse Ronan
At 21 years old, Saoirse isn’t that much older than Celaena’s character. She has the hair and the eyes to match the character description, and has played the haunting main character of Hanna (2011) which places her in good stead to portray Celaena. In Hanna, she played the role of the talented 16 year old who had been raised by her father to become the perfect assassin – now does that sound familiar to a character we know?
Nadia’s Suggestion: Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult is a very talented author whose acting ranges from Tony in Skins to the Beast in X-men. I don’t doubt his ability to play the character well. He has the dark hair (okay it could be darker) and blue eyes of Dorian and the charm to play him. The only downside is his age, he’s 25 years old and has been playing older characters recently. He might not be able to pull off Dorian’s 19 years.
Elizabeth’s Suggestion: Ansel Elgort
At 21 he is a lot closer to Prince Dorian’s age, and he’s got the dark hair to go with it. However, he doesn’t have the same blue eyes, but small details like that aren’t enough of a reason to discount a talented actor. He’s starred as one of the leading roles in Fault in Our Stars and from that we know he can portray a strong, romantic character.
His performance in Kingsman The Secret Service showed that Taron Egerton is a talented actor that can portray a wide range of personalities. His stunts in that movie show that he clearly has the ability to play the Captain of the Guard and could hold his own with Celaena. He has the badassness about him that is reflective of Chaol’s strong character, and the rugged looks to go with it.
Princess Nehemia Ytger
Nehemia needs an actress who can pull off her strong personality along with her kindness and love for the people. Kat is a talented actress who has been included in a lot of fancasts for Nehemia before ours. After playing Bonnie in the Vampire Diaries, we know she’ll be able to play Nehemia’s mystery and her relationship with Celaena.
When I imagine Kaltain, I imagine someone who looks just like Adelaide Kane. Someone who can pull off the devious, jealous look and would look great in long dresses and gowns to be a lady. She has played a wide range of roles, from the cold and fierce Cora Hale in Teen Wolf to Mary Queen of Scots in Reign, a part that shows Adelaide already knows how to play royalty.
Julie Benz is mostly a Television actress but her roles have always been varied, she has been a vampire (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), a loving and caring woman who has suffered abuse (Dexter) and a strong leader (Defiance). With her blonde hair and ability to carry herself strongly (as evidenced in Defiance) she could easily play the half-fae Queen.
The King of Adarlan
To those of you who know him as Thorin, we’d like to cast you back to an older time, where he played Sir Guy of Gisborne in the BBC Robin Hood TV series, and trust me, Richard Armitage can play villain (I mean sure, Guy isn’t really evil, but he’s still the baddie). He would add a new dimension to the character of the King that we’re missing from the books (considering he doesn’t get a huge focus, other that Celaena’s fear of him). There isn’t really a description of the King in the books, so we’re really free to go with whatever actor we want, but considering he’s Dorian’s father I’m going to guess they share features, dark hair and blues eyes for example. This would also likely put the King in his 40s, just like Richard Armitage.
How could we resist casting Sam? Callum McAuliffe is a talented Australian actor who has been in the likes of I Am Number Four (2011), the Great Gatsby (2013) and Robot Overlords (2014). With brown hair and brown eyes he matches Sam’s description and I’m going to stop talking about Sam now because it hurts too much to think about him.
So what do you think of our Throne of Glass fan-cast? Do you agree? Are there other suggestions you’d add? Tell us in the comments below.
